FiliTico TheBeatMonger presents a local and cyber legend of psytrance ARJUNA spinning some of the good sh1t, this time a blend of techhouse moving onto some dark and driving psytrance.

He's been in the game for over a decade and has thrown some of the most memorable parties those who've been there have ever attended. He also launched his record label: Dharma Kshetra and you can check out his Nykto compilation on psyshop.

I will spin an old school Infected Mushroom set (stuff from their first couple albums) and will probably make it into a podcast as well. Tune in!

64 Hz psytrance

I found this psytrance minidoc about a year ago and had forgotten about it within the layers of bookmarks and the erosion of time. It is set in Porto Alegre, Brazil 2006 and was apparently made by some college students.

Check out some of the other psy trance docs I have posted from the Tube.

Goa Trance Documentary

This one is an oldie (Flying Rhino interview among other things), but nonetheless quite a nice find.

Another favorite of mine is an older post about a video I found called 7 Minute Psy Trance Documentary. This one is single-handedly the best way I have found to explain psytrance to newcomers. Bliss.

Philosomatika

As one of the most respected psy and progressive Trance webcasts for many years, Philosomatika continues to trailblaze the net with its strong community of listeners and contributors.

Their listenership pushes thousands at a time, and that is a lot considering how small and underground the psytrance scene is. The selection is varied and many DJs contribute great sets.

7 minute Psytrance Documentary

Warning: the following video conveys a set of truths that just might change your life. This mini-doc has somehow managed to express the meaning of psy-trance and its relationship to nature and humanity.

Filitico Owl Radio mix --el otro soy yo-- April 3 part 2 psy trance

This is the second part of my weekly mix at FAU's radio station. I'm glad I managed to squeeze both in for this week's radio show Tuesday's 2-4 p.m. at Owl Radio.

After the show I realized how much Yellow Sunshine Explosion dominated the mix. It's a great record label featuring some of the best progressive psychedelic trance in the world.

Filitico Owl Radio mix --el otro soy yo-- feb 27 progressive psychedelic trance

My third mix of the year comes full circle back to the psychedelic side of things. This is much closer to what I will be spinning at Ultra Music Festival this year. I will find some space to host all the mixes soon.

This is the last partially non-harmonic mix I am making and I will tell you why soon. As you can also see, I have a couple old favorite record labels that I believe represent the majority of the progressive psychedelic trance scene. I should have added something from Digital Structures as well.

South African PsyTrance

These are the more prominent South African Psy Trance record labels. They are independent, thriving, and innovative.

Exogenic Records

These guys produce a sound so unique and underground, even the fringe of the music society knows little about them. I found them by chance, a typo on a discogs search. Soon I was a loyal follower.

  • Founder: Jacob Ehrnrooth (1996)
  • Location: Finland
  • Label Relations: Indie Label; Sub-labels: Exogenic Breaks, Terra Records, XO Records
  • Genre: Psychedelic Goa Trance, Funky Forest Trance, Psychedelic Breaks, Psybient
  • Discography
  • Official Webpage
  • Myspace
  • Online Shops: Psyshop, Saikosounds

Some of the more interesting albums they have produced include Eraser vs. Yöjalka - Tarinat and Haltya - Electric Help Elves. This sound, I have noticed, is very polarized at first glance: either you love it or hate it. Just like jazz, this is the kind of music that you need to know a little about to appreciate its nuances.

The setting should be an outdoor party. In Finland, that would be during the summer months in a forest where the imagination can soar without the limits of day-to-day living.

Psynews

Psynews caters to psychedelic electronic music reviews. Several bloggers from around the world describe these pictoresque soundscapes in great detail. Some of the more interesting people here include abasio, pr0fane, DeathPosture, RAH, among others.

Many trainspotters turn to this site looking for gems to decorate their collections. I have met many DJs, artists, and label 'executives' through this site, but most of all, I love most of the reviews.

The music making section is quite informative from a ground-up standpoint, and discussions about equipment and engineering techniques come daily. However, I feel that the parties & travel section is too underdeveloped to the point of being useless.

I have noticed that traffic in this site has dwindled the past year. I attribute this to a scene that is in a recession now. Dark Psy was huge for some time, but now the artists and DJs are moving in a new direction. Hopefully it will go back to the warm analog Goa Trance, but wishful thinking gets me nowhere.

Note that although this is an internet medium, the notion of downloading music while disregarding copyright laws is heavily frowned upon. Swearing exists, but directly assaulting other users is prohibited.

Astral Projection

Wikipedia calls it an "interpretation of out-of-body experiences (OBEs) achieved either awake or via lucid dreaming, deep meditation, or use of psychotropics." Astral Projection is also the name of one of my favorite artists in the Goa Trance scene.

Astral Projection has played here in Florida at the Blue Cafe in Aventura, and I had the honor of opening for them. Their members, Avi Nissim and Lior Perlmutter, are based in Israel and have released over ten albums since the mid nineties mostly under the Phonokol label. There is an inspiring aura to their style and infectious euphoria buried within their rhythms.

Not many mention Goa Trance without mentioning Astral Projection within the same conversation. However and unfortunately, among the growing numbers of elitists in the Psy Trance scene, they have been dubbed as sell-outs because they have allowed themselves to change their sound over the last couple years, although not as drastically as Infected Mushroom (of which I will speak of sooner of later)

"Not many mention
Goa Trance
without mentioning
Astral Projection
in the same conversation."

These elitists, I feel sorry for them but also empathize with their plight. Music is a very personal thing, and we feel that when we find something that so strongly represents our identity, we become very possessive. But who are you to tell the creators of art what to do? It all comes down to whether art belongs to the creator or to the community.

Dragonfly Records

Once upon a time, I was surfing the internet seas of broadband music sampling and downloading and hit the tip of an iceberg. I found a form of music that changed my life in many ways. They called it Goa Trance, because that was where it was born: Goa, India.

Little known outside the hippie backpacker circles of the 80’s and 90’s, this former Portuguese colony gave birth to a subculture that has so deeply affected its die-hard followers.

Goa Trance stands for a celebration of life and oneness with nature mixed with the latest advancements in sonic technology. At the peak of the Goan wave, UK based Dragonfly Records shined with a continual stream of high quality music.

The label, owned by music producer extraordinaire Martin "Youth" Glover, known for collaborations with Guns N' Roses, The Orb, Paul McCartney and Heather Nova, has released over a hundred albums in a scene where most labels die before their third release.

"At the peak of the Goan wave, UK based
Dragonfly Records
shined with a continual stream of
high quality music."

The cream of Goa Trance genre, lately known as Psy Trance, although some purists maintain that both are actually two separate genres (another blog in and of itself), has included many Dragonfly pioneers such as Hallucinogen, Pleiadians, Man With No Name, The Infinity Project, Total Eclipse, among others.

Today Dragonfly has branched off into Kamaflage, a Dark House sub-label, and Liquid Sound Design, a Psybient Downtempo outfit. Nothing less than hearing the sounds of Dragonfly out in the open with a large group of newly met friends for several days and forgetting the problems of the world, just for a little bit…

I guess it’s as conducive to a spiritual realignment as you can get.
