Going Digital

2007 definitely has seen more experimental business models for music distribution than any other year to date. Digital music: 2007 year in review written by last100 editor Steve O'Hear rounds-up how the industry has continued to use DRM, the deployment of new mobile stores and services, and pay what you want schemes spearheaded by Radiohead.

I am a bit worried about O-Hear's proposition that the music tax, basically a flat rate service for ISPs and cell phone carriers to access major record labels music services, will be pushed heavily in 2008. I would like my carrier (if they do try something new for a change) to allow an opt-out, since most of the music I listen to is not coming from the Majors lately and I wouldn't be too happy about paying money for something I am not listening to.

Filitico Owl Radio mix --el otro soy yo-- April 3 part 2 psy trance

This is the second part of my weekly mix at FAU's radio station. I'm glad I managed to squeeze both in for this week's radio show Tuesday's 2-4 p.m. at Owl Radio.

After the show I realized how much Yellow Sunshine Explosion dominated the mix. It's a great record label featuring some of the best progressive psychedelic trance in the world.

Filitico Owl Radio mix --el otro soy yo-- feb 27 progressive psychedelic trance

My third mix of the year comes full circle back to the psychedelic side of things. This is much closer to what I will be spinning at Ultra Music Festival this year. I will find some space to host all the mixes soon.

This is the last partially non-harmonic mix I am making and I will tell you why soon. As you can also see, I have a couple old favorite record labels that I believe represent the majority of the progressive psychedelic trance scene. I should have added something from Digital Structures as well.

South African PsyTrance

These are the more prominent South African Psy Trance record labels. They are independent, thriving, and innovative.

20070221

Border Community

To put James Holden & co. in words is to undertake a massive quest of genre gerrymandering. Some call his music 'progressive', others say 'minimal'. Is it trance? house?

  • Founder: James Holden(2003)
  • Location: London
  • Genre: from their Website, "Border Community is about dance music that doesnt fit in a category, and about providing djs with the tools to innovate."
  • Label Relations: Indie label
  • Discography:
  • Official Webpage:
  • Myspace: n/a
  • Artists releasing on B.C.: James Holden, Petter, Nathan Fake, Avus, Fairmont, Extrawelt, Dextro, The MFA and Lazy Fat People

Online Shops:

  • 3beat (does B.C.'s label management and has an online shop)
  • Amato (does their distribution and also has a shop)
  • Juno (one of the most respected online electronic music shops)

The following samples are almost criminal to play. The only justice here would include 30,000+ Watts.

Is it possible to sit back and bob your head at the same time? These guys need to visit South Florida more often.

Tresor Records

Tresor is one of the most influential names in electronic music, specifically of the techno flavors. Their history is closely tied to the Deutsche Wiedervereinigung, the unification of Germany in 1990. Tresor is both a nightclub and a record label. While the nightclub eventually closed in 2005, the label is still running strong.

  • Founder: Dimitri Hegemann (1991)
  • Location: Berlin, Germany
  • Genre: Techno, Deep House, Hard House and Techno, Electro, Minimal, Breaks, Experimental, and many more.
  • Label Relations: Indie label; Parent label: Interfisch; Sub-label: Supremat
  • Discography
  • Official Webpage
  • Myspace
  • Online Shops: TresorBerlin, Juno

The best electronic producers and DJs the world over have in some form been involved with Tresor including Matthew Herbert, Jeff Mills, Daniel Bell, Stewart Walker, Drexciya, Robert Hood, among others.

"Tresor Berlin: The Vault & the Electronic Frontier" directed by Mike Andrawis, documents the trials and tribulations of those involved with the label/club until its closure. However, there is talk of opening in a new location sometime in 2007.

Exogenic Records

These guys produce a sound so unique and underground, even the fringe of the music society knows little about them. I found them by chance, a typo on a discogs search. Soon I was a loyal follower.

  • Founder: Jacob Ehrnrooth (1996)
  • Location: Finland
  • Label Relations: Indie Label; Sub-labels: Exogenic Breaks, Terra Records, XO Records
  • Genre: Psychedelic Goa Trance, Funky Forest Trance, Psychedelic Breaks, Psybient
  • Discography
  • Official Webpage
  • Myspace
  • Online Shops: Psyshop, Saikosounds

Some of the more interesting albums they have produced include Eraser vs. Yöjalka - Tarinat and Haltya - Electric Help Elves. This sound, I have noticed, is very polarized at first glance: either you love it or hate it. Just like jazz, this is the kind of music that you need to know a little about to appreciate its nuances.

The setting should be an outdoor party. In Finland, that would be during the summer months in a forest where the imagination can soar without the limits of day-to-day living.

Dragonfly Records

Once upon a time, I was surfing the internet seas of broadband music sampling and downloading and hit the tip of an iceberg. I found a form of music that changed my life in many ways. They called it Goa Trance, because that was where it was born: Goa, India.

Little known outside the hippie backpacker circles of the 80’s and 90’s, this former Portuguese colony gave birth to a subculture that has so deeply affected its die-hard followers.

Goa Trance stands for a celebration of life and oneness with nature mixed with the latest advancements in sonic technology. At the peak of the Goan wave, UK based Dragonfly Records shined with a continual stream of high quality music.

The label, owned by music producer extraordinaire Martin "Youth" Glover, known for collaborations with Guns N' Roses, The Orb, Paul McCartney and Heather Nova, has released over a hundred albums in a scene where most labels die before their third release.

"At the peak of the Goan wave, UK based
Dragonfly Records
shined with a continual stream of
high quality music."

The cream of Goa Trance genre, lately known as Psy Trance, although some purists maintain that both are actually two separate genres (another blog in and of itself), has included many Dragonfly pioneers such as Hallucinogen, Pleiadians, Man With No Name, The Infinity Project, Total Eclipse, among others.

Today Dragonfly has branched off into Kamaflage, a Dark House sub-label, and Liquid Sound Design, a Psybient Downtempo outfit. Nothing less than hearing the sounds of Dragonfly out in the open with a large group of newly met friends for several days and forgetting the problems of the world, just for a little bit…

I guess it’s as conducive to a spiritual realignment as you can get.
